The e40 Core System

The e40 Core is a secure, computer-controlled key cabinet. Unlike a traditional key cabinet, it uses electronic locks, user authentication, and management software to control who can access each key and when.

Written by Daniel Murray

What problem does it solve?

Traditional key storage leads to misplaced keys, no accountability, and time lost searching for the right access. The e40 Core eliminates this by:

  • Logging every key transaction automatically

  • Restricting access by user permissions

  • Sending automated alerts and reports

  • Replacing manual key tracking with live data through the V4 web platform

Key features

Multiple access options — PIN code, RFiD card, or biometric fingerprint. All three are available on every cabinet.

User group access levels — Assign users into groups for controlled, role-based access.

Real-time insights — Live reporting through the e-Track V4 web software for all cabinets, keys, assets and users.

High security — High-tolerance locks designed to resist forced entry.

Offline mode — Cabinets continue to function and record transactions even when offline. Data syncs once the connection is restored.

Battery backup — 5.4 Ah Lead Acid battery keeps the cabinet running for up to 8 hours during a power outage.

User-friendly navigation — Touch and web interfaces designed for ease of use.

Off-set key positions — Fob slots are designed to accommodate larger bunches of keys.

UK manufactured — All cabinets are designed and manufactured in the UK.

Door configuration options

The e40 Core is available with two door types:

  • Clear polycarbonate — Visual access to keys at all times

  • Solid steel — Full concealment, no external visibility

Cabinet scalability

The Core system is designed to scale. Each e200 cabinet can be expanded with up to 14 extension units, supporting a total of 3,000 keys on a single networked system.

Extension cabinets connect directly to the main controller — no additional screens or control hardware required. Start small and expand as your operation grows.

How it works — typical workflow

  1. User login — The user identifies themselves using PIN, card, or biometric access.

  2. Key selection — The user selects the desired key or group on the touchscreen.

  3. Key release — The cabinet illuminates the fob slot and unlocks the designated key.

  4. Transaction logging — The system logs the transaction and sends data to the web software.

  5. Key usage — The user carries out their task with the allocated vehicle, room, or equipment.

  6. Key return — On return, the user logs in, selects "Return", and re-inserts the key into a fob slot.

Compliance & quality

All e-Track cabinets are tested to meet FCC, EMC, and Radio Approval standards up to Class B.

Internal quality inspections follow a rigorous Quality Control Procedure (QCP), including a Certificate of Conformity, to verify every unit meets our standards.
